Parksville is best known for its large, sandy beaches and its best-known event is the world-famous sandcastle-building competition in the summer.
Local media, businesses and civil services frequently refer to Parksville, with its adjacent municipalities, as the community of “Oceanside”, typically including Qualicum Beach, French Creek, Coombs, Hilliers, Errington and Nanoose.
Spanish explorers were in the area as early as 1791. Their maps called the Englishman River “Rio de Grullas”, the River of Cranes.
